Hi, I’m Krishna, founder of Petite Île.
I created Petite Île as a tribute to my mother’s cooking and to the island our family calls home. To me, Mauritius is one of the most beautiful places on earth—a small island of dramatic mountain peaks, rushing rivers, dense forests, and crystal-blue water.
Growing up there, life often revolved around food. At the center of it all was my mother, whom her grandchildren lovingly call Machetti.
From a tiny kitchen and a two-burner tabletop stove, she prepared simple, unpretentious dishes filled with extraordinary flavor. Her cooking was never rushed. Every meal was made with patience, care, and a deep understanding of how the right ingredients and spices could transform a dish.
My mother had an instinct for cooking. She rarely needed to measure. She simply knew when a dish needed a little more of this, a little less of that, or a few more minutes for the flavors to come together.
Quality always mattered to her. She chose the best ingredients she could find and believed that truly delicious food begins with care.
Her handmade samoussas (which are known here as samosas) were always part of our home. They were ready to fry whenever friends or family stopped by for tea, or when my siblings and I returned from late lessons looking for something warm and comforting to brighten the day.
By the 1980s, neighbors had begun asking to buy them. What started as a family favorite soon became something our community looked forward to and enjoyed.
Petite Île is built upon that legacy with the recipes, traditions, and generosity that began in my mother’s kitchen.
Mauritius is a small island nation in the Indian Ocean, east of Madagascar. Though modest in size, it is rich in culture, natural beauty, and culinary tradition.
Mauritian food reflects the island’s diverse African, Indian, Chinese, and European influences. Fragrant curries, fresh seafood, street-side dholl puri, aromatic spices, and handmade samoussas (samosas) all come together to create food that is vibrant, welcoming, and full of personality.
Mauritius is where I grew up and where the roots of Petite Île were planted. Bringing these flavors to the United States is my way of sharing a piece of home and continuing a family tradition, one delicious bite at a time. Enjoy our samosas from Machetti’s kitchen to your table.
